OBS Studio Setup Guide for Streamers
OBS Studio (Open Broadcaster Software) is the most widely used free streaming software in the world. It works on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and is compatible with Twitch, YouTube, Kick, TikTok, and virtually every streaming platform. This guide covers everything you need to know to set up OBS Studio for live streaming — from your first install to advanced scene setup with overlays, alerts, and timers.
What Is OBS Studio?
OBS Studio is a free, open-source program that captures your gameplay, webcam, and microphone and combines them into a single stream output. It gives you full control over every element of your stream — scenes, sources, audio mixing, transitions, and encoding settings. Unlike Streamlabs or StreamElements, OBS Studio is a standalone desktop app with no required account and no subscription.
How to Download and Install OBS Studio
Go to obsproject.com and download the version for your operating system (Windows, Mac, or Linux). Run the installer and follow the setup wizard. When you first launch OBS, the Auto-Configuration Wizard will appear — run it. It will test your system and recommend the best encoding settings for your hardware and internet connection automatically.
Best OBS Studio Settings for Streaming
For most streamers on a standard PC, these settings work well for 1080p streaming:
- Encoder: NVENC (NVIDIA) or AMD AVC — use hardware encoding if available; software x264 if not
- Bitrate: 6000 Kbps for Twitch, 6000–9000 Kbps for YouTube
- Resolution: 1920x1080 output, scaled from your base canvas
- Frame Rate: 60 FPS for gameplay, 30 FPS acceptable for Just Chatting
- Audio Bitrate: 160 Kbps minimum, 320 Kbps recommended

How to Set Up Scenes in OBS Studio
Scenes are the different views you switch between during a stream — Gameplay, Just Chatting, Starting Soon, BRB, and Ending Soon. Each scene contains Sources: the individual elements like your game capture, webcam, overlays, and alerts. Create a separate scene for each view, then add your sources inside each one.
Stream Designz overlay packages include pre-made files for all of these scenes. Browse our Animated Overlay Packages and Ultimate Stream Bundles for complete scene setups.
How to Add Stream Overlays in OBS Studio
Stream overlays are graphic files you add as sources inside your OBS scenes. Animated overlays use WebM or MP4 format — add them as Media Source in OBS. Static overlays use PNG format — add them as Image Source. Position and resize each element using the OBS canvas.
For a full walkthrough, see OBS Studio Overlay Setup for Beginners. For vertical TikTok overlays in OBS, see How to Setup Vertical Overlays in OBS Studio.
How to Add Stream Alerts in OBS Studio
Stream alerts are on-screen notifications that fire when viewers follow, subscribe, donate, or send bits. In OBS Studio, alerts are added via a Browser Source connected to an alert service like StreamElements or Streamlabs Alerts. See How to Add Stream Alerts to OBS Studio and How to Setup Twitch Alerts in OBS Studio for step-by-step instructions.

How to Add a Countdown Timer in OBS Studio
A countdown timer goes on your Starting Soon scene so viewers know when you go live. In OBS, add your timer MP4 file as a Media Source set to loop. See How to Add a Countdown Timer Using OBS Studio for detailed instructions.

How to Add a Stinger Transition in OBS Studio
A stinger transition is an animated clip that plays when you switch between scenes, masking the cut with a smooth animation. In OBS Studio, go to Scene Transitions, click the + button, and select Stinger Transition. Add your WebM stinger file and set the transition point.

OBS Studio vs Streamlabs — Which Should You Use?
OBS Studio is the more lightweight and customizable option — ideal for streamers who want full control and don’t need built-in widgets. Streamlabs is built on top of OBS and adds a more beginner-friendly interface with built-in alert boxes, themes, and a tip page. Both are free. See our Streamlabs Setup Guide for a full breakdown.
