3 Audio Filters for Pro Sound in OBS

You don't need to upgrade to an expensive microphone to make your audio sound good when you're streaming or creating content. I'm going to show you the three filters you can apply in OBS, regardless of what mic you have, that will make your sound quality better. 

First Filter

In OBS, go to the dropdown menu under 'Mic/Aux' in the 'Audio Mixer' section. Select 'Filters' and then click the plus icon. 

The first thing we're going to add is 'Noise Suppression.' This will allow us to remove any fan noise. I have a really big fan, and in my videos, no one can hear it. 

Two things you want to know: RNNoise is the filter that I recommend. If you don't have a strong enough PC, this may cause some lagging. If you see your stream lagging, select the one that says 'low CPU usage, low quality,' and see how that sounds. I encourage you to start with RNNoise and see what happens.

Second Filter

The next one that we'll add is the 'Compressor.' 

This is going to be really good for moments where you're gaming or talking and get excited. When your voice gets super high, you don't want to blow out your viewers' ears. This is going to stop your voice from getting to a certain level, keeping it in a good range.

It will also do the same thing if you get too low or if you have a soft voice. It will make it so that your viewers can hear you consistently throughout your stream or content.

Third Filter

The next filter that you want to add is the '3-Band Equalizer.'

All of these can be adjusted; everybody's voice is completely different. Your voice is different than mine. My goal is to give you the knowledge of the tools available to you in OBS. Then, you can adjust your audio as you see fit.

The '3-Band Equalizer' is going to give you a rich, podcast-like sound. It will have your viewers asking in chat, "Hey, what kind of microphone is that?" It's not your actual microphone. It's just that you understand how audio works now because you're looking at these filters.

One of the things you can do is put this a little bit higher and a little bit lower. I can't really give you direct modifications because your voice is different. 

Once you have those settings applied, I encourage you to turn them all on and record audio so you can hear what it sounds like. Don't just listen to the audio through your headphones. Play it through your speakers. Download the recording. Play it on your phone. You'll want to hear it across different devices because your viewers are going to be hearing your stream across different devices. If you do this, you'll be so much happier with your audio.
